If you don’t intend to breed from your pet, neutering is the most responsible action.
Neutering is a straightforward operation that involves an animal having its ovaries or testes removed. This means that the animal is no longer able to reproduce.
As well as not having to worry about your pet getting pregnant, neutering offers a number of other benefits including a reduction in unwanted behaviour and little to no risk of developing certain diseases.
Neutering a female animal means:
- Pregnancy is prevented
- They will no longer come into season, bleed or invite unwanted attention
- Prevention of uterus infections and certain types of cancer
- Prevention of siblings mating
Neutering a male animal means:
- Prevention of testicular cancer
- Reduction in roaming, urinary marking and aggressive behaviour
- Prevention of siblings mating
Having your pet neutered also makes financial sense, especially if you don’t intend to breed from your animal. Litters are not only noisy, demanding and expensive; they also consume as much time as a newborn child.
At Jerry McCarthy Veterinary Clinic our surgeons are all highly skilled at neutering animals. Our nursing staff will then oversee an animal’s recovery to ensure that they are warm, relaxed and comfortable at all times. In the majority of cases pets are ready to go home by the end of the day.
We neuter a number of animals at Jerry McCarthy Veterinary Clinic including cats, dogs, ferrets and rabbits.
