Dental care is vital to the overall health of any pet. Dental disease can lead to health issues with the heart, liver, and kidneys, and can affect the entire body through the bloodstream. In fact, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years of age suffer from some form of dental disease, making it the most common pet health issue among our pet population. In spite of these disturbing facts, many pet owners are not aware of the importance of dental care to their pets’ health. There are a lot of different ways to improve your pets’ dental hygiene, including home brushing, dental chews, and regular inspection.
- Dermatology / Deirmeolaíocht
Dermatology revolves around the skin. Many pets routinely have skin problems, which can be quite challenging for our veterinarians. Some of the skin problems we routinely see include fleas and other parasites. Our office also commonly sees allergies, infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancers that affect a pet’s’ skin condition. Many pets itch when they are faced with a skin condition. Left untreated, pets can lose their hair. This still won’t stop them from scratching, and pets can develop skin infections from all of their itching. Some pets have skin problems only once in awhile, while others seem to be scratching all of the time.We will do everything that we can do to get your pets some relief, though first we need to determine the cause of your pets’ itchiness. We are proud to be able to offer our patients many dermatologic procedures. We offer allergy and fungal testing, along with cultures and biopsies if needed.

We are proud to offer nutritional counseling to keep pets at healthy weights. If they are too big, we offer counseling to get your pets back to the weight they should be.Obesity is a common problem for our pets. Many people enjoy giving their pets “people food” as a treat, but it is quite harmful for them. Overfeeding also makes pets too heavy. If you want healthy pets who live a long and happy lives,, you need to be careful about what they eat. Exercise is also necessary for a healthy life.Obesity is a big problem. Recent studies show that more than 50 percent of dogs are obese. The rate is even higher in cats (60 percent). Birds, which don’t typically eat “people food,” are often obese because their owners leave food out for them all the time.Cutting back on food is not always helpful because then your pets won’t get enough of the nutrients they need. Because of this, it is important to balance the amount of food with the amount of exercise to help your pets lose weight.
- Worming / Cóireáil in aghaidh péisteanna
Heartworms (or even a single adult heartworm) can cause a lot of damage to an infected dog. Adult heartworms can grow as long as twelve inches when they are full grown. At that point, they live in the heart and lungs which cause a dog to go into heart and lung failure. The treatment can be just as deadly. When the adult worms are killed, they travel throughout the bloodstream and can cause all kinds of problems. For this reason, dogs who are receiving treatment need to be monitored closely. There are times when a dog may need additional treatment to get rid of all of the heartworms. It is much easier to test your dog for heartworm and keep him or her on a preventative than to lose your dog to this deadly but easily preventable disease.
